Vườn hoa Queens (Queens Botanical Garden) gần nhà tôi tuy nhỏ nhưng đẹp và dễ thương. Bông hoa mùa xuân ở đây rực rỡ không thua những vườn hoa khác vùng New York.
Đặc biệt tòa nhà “Visitor’s Center” ở đây là một tòa nhà “xanh” nhất thành phố New York (New York’s greenest building), theo sự bầu chọn của cơ quan LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

Thành phố New York có 5 quận: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx và Staten Island. Manhattan là quận có nhiều tòa nhà chọc trời, nhiều cơ sở thương mại, nhiều điều ngoạn mục du khách thich viếng thăm. Nếu các bạn đến thăm viếng New York như một du khách, các bạn chỉ ở lẫn quẩn quận Manhattan mà thôi.
Cư dân New York vô Manhattan làm việc, và về các quận kia để sống. Mỗi ngày cả triệu người đổ xô vô Manhattan, sáng vác ô đi chiều vác ô về. Vườn hoa Queens cách nhà tôi khoảng 5 phút lái xe, gần chợ Tàu Flushing, nên nhiều người da vàng phần lớn là Tàu đến đây thăm viếng.
Mặc dầu gần chợ Tàu ồn ào và đông đúc người, nhưng đây là một ốc đảo (oasis). Vườn hoa này yên tĩnh vô cùng, nên các bạn đến đây chắc chắn sẽ được yên ổn đi lòng vòng thưởng thức bông hoa, khác với vườn Tao Đàn Saigon rần rần người ta mỗi buổi sáng đến đây tập thể thao và đi bộ.
Vườn hoa Queens được xây dựng từ năm 1939, sau khi tôi sanh được 2 năm. Lúc đó Vườn hoa này chỉ là một phần của “World Expo” tại Queens, nên nhỏ hơn bây giờ.
Sau World Expo năm 1939, vườn hoa này được mở rộng thêm, nhưng lúc đó vườn hoa còn nằm phía bên Flushing Meadows Park, nổi tiếng vì đây là nơi tranh tài những trận vô địch quần vợt tại Mỹ hàng năm.
Năm 1964 khi World Expo được tổ chức lại ở Flushing Meadows Park, vườn hoa này được dời qua bên kia đường, tại địa điểm hiện nay. Vườn hoa hiện nay chỉ rộng khoảng 39 mẫu Anh thôi, không rộng lắm, nhưng có sức quyến rũ đặc biệt.
